Google's AI Models Weren't Built For Us
There's a genre of post on X that goes like this: "Tried Gemini Pro via the API. Tool calling is broken. It hallucinates arguments. Ignores the schema entirely. How is this a serious product?"
The replies pile on. Someone mentions the model ignoring function calls. Another developer says they got garbage JSON back. Ethan Mollick notes that the model itself is competitive with Claude and GPT-4, but the developer experience lags significantly. A consensus forms: Google's models are underbaked. They can't be trusted for agentic workloads. Use them if you must, but don't expect reliability.
This is all true. I've seen it. I've fixed Chimera bugs that trace back to exactly these failures.
And yet.
Open NotebookLM. Drop in a research paper, a company memo, and a YouTube transcript. Ask it to synthesize findings, generate a report, and export the outline to Google Docs. It does all of this — seamlessly, across multiple Google products, without a single broken tool call or hallucinated function.
Open Google AI Studio. Upload a video, ask it to analyze the content frame-by-frame, run code on the extracted data, and produce a structured JSON output. It works. The model feels sharper here — less constrained, more capable. Power users consistently report that AI Studio delivers better model performance than the consumer Gemini app, which layers on safety systems that degrade output quality.
The tools are not broken. They just weren't built for us.
Two different products wearing the same name
When you call gemini-2.5-pro via the API, you get a language model. A very large one, with impressive context windows and competitive benchmark scores, but fundamentally the same abstraction as calling GPT-4 or Claude: send tokens, receive tokens.
When you use Gemini inside a Google product, you get something different. The model is the engine, but the product is the full Google stack: Search grounding, Gmail context, Calendar awareness, YouTube video understanding, Maps geospatial reasoning, Workspace document editing. These aren't API features you toggle on. They're deeply integrated product capabilities that make the model feel smarter because it has access to information and tools you didn't have to wire up yourself.
NotebookLM is the clearest example. The Gemini integration lets you attach notebooks directly to conversations — your research becomes the model's working memory without re-uploading, without RAG pipelines, without chunking strategies. As one XDA developer put it: "Instead of pulling insights from NotebookLM and then copy-pasting them somewhere useful, Gemini acts on my notebook directly." This isn't a better model. It's a better product — one where the model never had to be a standalone API in the first place.
The enthusiast's blind spot
The AI developer community has internalized a specific expectation: models are commodities. You swap one for another by changing the API endpoint. Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek — they all speak roughly the same language, and the question is which one performs better at your particular task.
This expectation makes sense when every model is a commodity. OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and the OpenRouter ecosystem all compete on raw model quality. Better reasoning. Better code generation. Lower cost. Their models are designed to be API-first — general-purpose tools that you integrate into whatever you're building.
Google is playing a different game. They're not trying to sell you a model. They're trying to sell you Google.
The Gemini API exists because developers expect one, and because some enterprise customers need it for Vertex AI workloads. But it's not the product. The product is Gemini inside Gmail summarizing your threads. Gemini inside Sheets suggesting formulas. Gemini inside NotebookLM turning your scattered research into coherent analysis. Gemini inside Search answering questions before you finish typing them.
These integrations don't just work better than the API. They work differently. The model has access to things your API key can't buy — your email, your calendar, your documents, Google's search index. The safety layers that make the API feel constrained are the same layers that make the consumer product feel trustworthy. The tool calling that breaks in your agent loop is flawless in NotebookLM because it's not a general-purpose function calling API. It's a specific integration with specific Google services, tested against specific use cases, with no ambiguity about what the model should do.
What this means for developers
None of this means you shouldn't use Gemini's API. It means you should understand what you're buying.
If you need a general-purpose model for agentic workloads — tool calling, structured output, autonomous reasoning — the API will frustrate you. This is not a secret. The X complaints are real. Tool calling is unreliable. JSON output is fragile. The model sometimes ignores schemas entirely. These are problems Google could fix, and probably will eventually, but they're not the priority. The priority is making Gemini work flawlessly inside the Google ecosystem.
If you need a model for a Google-integrated workflow — analyzing documents in Workspace, processing data in Sheets, building research pipelines in NotebookLM — Gemini is genuinely remarkable. The same model that can't handle your agent's function calls can synthesize a 50-page research report across a dozen sources and export it to the right Google Doc with perfect formatting. Because that's what it was built to do.
The mistake isn't using Gemini. It's expecting Gemini to be something it was never designed to be.
The bigger pattern
Google isn't unique here. Apple Intelligence is the same story — models that feel limited outside Apple's ecosystem but remarkable inside it. Microsoft is building Copilot deeper into Office, not just offering a better standalone model. The future of AI isn't better APIs. It's better integration.
The models that win won't be the ones with the highest benchmark scores. They'll be the ones that disappear into the products you already use — that know your context, your data, your workflow, without you having to build the scaffolding yourself.
Google's models weren't built for us. They were built for Google's vision of what AI should be: invisible, integrated, ambient. Not a tool you call. A capability that's already there.
And when you judge them by the wrong standard — as a standalone API rather than as an engine in a larger product — you miss what makes them work.
